Three years ago, Amy stepped into the freight forwarding industry for the very first time. After spending 20 years in her previous role, she made the bold decision to seek a fresh start — one that would challenge her, push her to grow, and open new doors professionally.
“I had left my past employment of 20 years and was looking for something new,” Amy explains. “This was a brand-new industry for me.”
What began as a leap into the unknown quickly evolved into a thriving career in logistics — and a leadership role she’s proud of.
Finding Purpose in Problem-Solving
Today, one of Amy’s favorite aspects of working in freight forwarding is the opportunity to solve problems every day. Logistics is an industry where no two days are the same, and challenges require quick thinking, collaboration, and adaptability.
“I like being able to solve problems,” she says. “As a manager, I enjoy working with my team and offering them support to ensure our customers are getting the best service possible.”
Of course, logistics comes with its share of challenges. Not every situation has a perfect resolution.
“The most challenging part is that you can’t always make the customer happy. Some things are beyond our control,” Amy explains. “We have to work to find the best solution possible and deliver unfortunate news in a way that the customer will be understanding.”
It’s this balance of honesty, empathy, and solution-driven thinking that defines strong leadership in the industry.
The Keys to Success in Logistics
When asked what it takes to succeed in freight forwarding, Amy’s answer is clear: patience and communication.
“Patience and understanding go a long way. You can’t be afraid of difficult conversations,” she says. “It also helps to pick up the phone and establish personal relationships with our partners.”
In a world driven by emails and instant messaging, she emphasizes the power of direct communication and relationship-building — a critical component in a global, fast-moving industry.
Encouraging Women to Join the Industry
For women considering a career in logistics, Amy’s message is empowering.
“With the right guidance, you can truly succeed in this industry,” she says. “I came in with no knowledge and was able to apply my prior management skills and continue to grow.”
Her journey demonstrates that experience in leadership, communication, and management can translate powerfully into freight forwarding — even without prior industry knowledge.
The Power of Mentorship
Behind Amy’s success is a strong support system. Mentorship has played a key role in her growth.
“Sumar and Jon have been a wonderful support team and have taught me so much.”
Their guidance helped her navigate a new industry and accelerate her development into a leadership role.
A Proud Milestone
One of Amy’s proudest career moments came sooner than she expected.
“Having the opportunity to become a manager so quickly from my start in this industry,” she shares. “Having no knowledge of the industry, I was proud that my prior management skills were recognized and that I could apply them at Trans-Border.”
It was a defining moment — proof that transferable skills, dedication, and a willingness to learn can open doors quickly.
A Culture of Growth at Trans-Border
At Trans-Border, professional development is not an afterthought — it’s part of the culture.
“Everyone at Trans-Border, from team members to upper management to directors, plays an active role in the everyday success of individuals and the company,” Amy says. “No one ever steers away from providing you the knowledge to learn and grow.”
Amy’s story is one of courage, adaptability, and leadership — a reminder that sometimes the most rewarding careers begin with a leap into the unknown.
