July 10th, 2025 – The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has taken a major step toward cleaner freight transportation with the launch of a new electric truck charging station at Port Newark. Positioned at the intersection of Marlin and Kellogg streets – right in the heart of the busiest container port on the East Coast – the station marks a critical investment in supporting zero-emission drayage operations.
This new charging site directly targets one of the port’s biggest environmental challenges: drayage trucks, which currently account for nearly half of port-related greenhouse gas emissions. To combat this, the facility includes four 350-kilowatt DC fast chargers, capable of delivering a 20- to 40-mile range boost in just 10 to 15 minutes, depending on load and conditions – helping reduce downtime and keep trucks moving efficiently.
The station is a key element of the Port Authority’s broader environmental mission. Leadership emphasized the importance of integrating sustainability throughout port operations – from the cargo offloaded from ships to the goods that ultimately reach homes and businesses across the region. With thousands of trucks passing through the port daily, reducing emissions from ground transport plays a critical role in shaping a cleaner, more efficient gateway.
This installation is also part of a wider net-zero roadmap that includes programs like the Truck Replacement Program and Clean Vessel Incentive, all aimed at cutting emissions through strategic investments and financial support. The authority’s long-term goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 goes beyond its own footprint, extending to operational partners throughout the region’s transportation infrastructure – from ports to airports.
Initially, the chargers will be available overnight from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m., in coordination with traffic flow changes from the ongoing Port Street Corridor Improvement Project. Expanded hours are expected as demand and infrastructure conditions evolve.
This latest addition reflects a clear commitment: transforming one of the nation’s busiest ports into a model of environmental responsibility.
