July 31st, 2025 – President Trump has signed an Executive Order imposing an additional 40% tariff on Brazil—bringing the total to 50%—in response to actions by the Brazilian government deemed a threat to U.S. national security, foreign policy, and economic interests. Citing the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, the Order declares a national emergency to counter Brazil’s alleged human rights abuses, political persecution, and coercion of U.S. companies. The administration specifically targets Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for using judicial power to suppress dissent, punish U.S. companies, and censor political speech, even extending to speech made on U.S. soil. As part of a broader “America First” strategy, President Trump has also revoked visas for de Moraes and his allies, vowing to continue protecting U.S. companies, citizens, and free speech from foreign interference and authoritarian overreach.
