October 16th, 2025 – As the Canada–U.S. trade environment continues to evolve, below is an update of the latest news regarding tariffs and the expiration of the Surtax Remission Order.
Key Highlights:
- Good News — Most U.S. Tariffs Removed (Effective September 1, 2025)
The Canadian government has repealed the United States Surtax Order, eliminating tariffs on most previously affected goods — a welcome development for Canadian importers. - Remaining Tariffs — Steel & Aluminum
Certain commodities remain subject to surtax under the Steel & Aluminum Surtax Order. You can find the detailed list of affected H/S classifications here. - Remission Order Expiration — October 16th, 2025
Goods still subject to surtax remain eligible for remission under the United States Surtax Remission Order (2025), as outlined in Customs Notice 25-19. Please note that this temporary order will expire on October 16th, 2025. Retroactive claims may still be filed for up to two years following the date of importation.
